Vehicle Camera Decommissioning
Use this model-neutral checklist to remove the complete system, restore the vehicle wiring, and verify that no loose hardware, open power lead, or parasitic draw remains.
Safety first: Follow the WatchGuard service instructions and your agency’s evidence-retention policy. Park safely, remove the key, wait for vehicle modules to sleep, disconnect the negative battery cable before removing powered wiring, and never leave an unfused live lead exposed.
1
Document the installation
- ☐ Photograph every camera, recorder/DVR, display, microphone, GPS antenna, router, and control head.
- ☐ Record serial numbers, asset tags, vehicle number, and connector locations.
- ☐ Save or transfer recordings according to agency policy before disconnecting storage or network equipment.
- ☐ Mark the original power, ignition, ground, and accessory connection points.
2
Shut down and isolate power
- ☐ Turn the vehicle off and allow the system’s normal shutdown sequence to finish.
- ☐ Remove the key and wait for the vehicle network/body modules to enter sleep mode.
- ☐ Disconnect the negative battery cable; protect it from accidental contact.
- ☐ Identify every system fuse, fuse tap, relay, inline fuse holder, and auxiliary power feed.
3
Remove interior components
- ☐ Remove the display, controller, microphone, panic/emergency switch, and other user controls.
- ☐ Remove front, rear, cabin, and trunk cameras, including brackets and protective covers.
- ☐ Remove DVR/recorder, hub, wireless router, modem, GPS/GNSS antenna, and storage accessories.
- ☐ Release connector locks before pulling; do not pull on the wire bundle.
4
Remove harnesses and mounts
- ☐ Trace each cable end-to-end before removing tape, loom, zip ties, and adhesive mounts.
- ☐ Remove coax, Ethernet, USB, serial, trigger, speaker, GPS, camera, and power/ground harnesses.
- ☐ Remove brackets, screws, rivet nuts, magnets, and adhesive pads without damaging airbags or factory harnesses.
- ☐ Inspect for chafing, pinched wires, drilled panels, water paths, or unused holes.
5
Restore vehicle wiring
- ☐ Remove fuse taps only if the original circuit can be restored exactly as documented.
- ☐ Reconnect factory wires with approved terminals, seals, heat-shrink, and loom—not loose twists or electrical tape alone.
- ☐ Remove aftermarket grounds and return the factory ground fastener, paint protection, and torque condition.
- ☐ Cap, insulate, and secure any retained accessory wire; verify it cannot contact chassis metal.
6
Test before releasing the vehicle
- ☐ Reconnect the battery and check for sparks, smoke, warning lamps, or unexpected module activity.
- ☐ Test ignition, starting, charging, lights, wipers, HVAC, radio, power locks, windows, and factory safety systems.
- ☐ Perform a key-off parasitic-draw test after the vehicle sleeps; investigate any excessive draw.
- ☐ Scan for diagnostic trouble codes and clear only codes created by the removed equipment when appropriate.
Final removal checklist
VehicleNo loose wiring, sharp edges, exposed terminals, missing trim, or damaged factory harnesses.
ElectricalFactory circuits restored, fuses correct, grounds secure, and sleep current verified.
AssetsAll components inventoried, labeled, packaged, and transferred with the removal record.
Important: Some installations include a separate power-management module, ignition interface, wireless equipment, or emergency signaling hardware. Treat each as a separate component and use the applicable WatchGuard model and vehicle-upfit documentation before disconnecting it.
