Axon Fleet 3 Installation Practice

Real-Life 12-Volt Hub Scenarios

Practice isolating power, ignition-enable, ground, and voltage-drop faults at the vehicle, fuse, and hub. Measure with the system connected and active whenever possible.

Training note: Values below are realistic examples, not Fleet 3 specifications. Confirm fuse ratings, current draw, wire gauge, grounding method, and connector details in the current Axon and vehicle upfit documentation.

Fleet 3 Current-Draw Reference

Use these ranges to recognize normal operating behavior during a loaded test.

FIELD PLANNING ESTIMATES
Full boot-up
3–5 A

Short startup surge while the hub, cameras, storage, and network equipment initialize.

Recording
2–4 A

Typical continuous planning range with the installed cameras actively recording.

Idle / ready
1–2 A

Ignition on, system awake, and not actively recording; router and accessories affect this reading.

Key off / sleep
≈30 mA

Reference target after shutdown delay and vehicle modules have entered sleep mode.

How to test: Put a DC clamp around the Fleet 3 constant-power lead, or use an appropriately rated inline ammeter. Capture boot peak, steady recording current, and sleep current separately.
Do not condemn the hub from one reading: A router, additional camera, ALPR equipment, cold temperature, low battery voltage, or a vehicle that has not completed shutdown can raise the measured current.

Source note: Axon’s Fleet 3 requirements identify a nominal 12 V supply and a 30 mA key-off reference. The boot, recording, and idle ranges above are training/planning estimates and should be replaced with the measured values for the installed vehicle configuration.

NO POWER

1. Hub is completely dark

Symptom: Ignition is on, but the hub and cameras show no power.

Measure: Check feed at fuse input, fuse output, hub power input, and ground with the circuit connected. Likely causes: Open fuse, loose fuse tap, back-pushed terminal, disconnected battery, or open ground. Fix: Repair the feed or terminal, clean and secure the approved ground, then cycle ignition.

VOLTAGE DROP

2. Hub reboots when cameras connect

Symptom: The hub starts unloaded but resets when the complete system is active.

Measure: Compare source voltage with hub voltage under load; test positive-side and ground-side drop separately. Likely causes: Long or undersized feed, poor splice, partially seated connector, or resistive return path. Fix: Correct the approved wire/protection and remake the faulty connection.

CRANKING SAG

3. System reboots during engine cranking

Symptom: The system works with the engine off but restarts during starter engagement.

Measure: Monitor hub voltage during crank and inspect battery-to-chassis and hub grounds. Likely causes: Weak battery, poor ground, shared accessory feed, or a connection opening under vibration. Fix: Resolve the vehicle starting/ground issue, then repeat the loaded test.

IGNITION ENABLE

4. Hub stays on after shutdown

Symptom: The system does not follow the expected ignition-off shutdown behavior.

Measure: Confirm the ignition-enable source changes state with the key and allow the normal shutdown delay. Likely causes: Enable lead tied to constant power, wrong upfitter circuit, relay backfeed, or vehicle modules not asleep. Fix: Correct the enable source/backfeed and repeat key-on/key-off testing.

INTERMITTENT

5. Device drops offline over bumps

Symptom: The system works in the bay but fails during door movement or road vibration.

Measure: Perform a controlled wiggle test while monitoring status and voltage. Likely causes: Unseated terminal, tight harness, broken conductor, or intermittent ground. Fix: Reseat/replace the terminal or harness, add strain relief, and repeat the vibration test.

GROUND FAULT

6. Hub powers but one device is unreliable

Symptom: The hub appears normal while one camera or peripheral disconnects.

Measure: Compare hub and device voltage while active; inspect the branch return for paint, corrosion, or loose hardware. Likely causes: Branch voltage drop, damaged harness, poor return path, moisture, or contamination. Fix: Repair the branch with approved parts and verify stable voltage during recording.

Field sequence

1. Observe

Record the exact symptom and vehicle state.

2. Reference

Use current Axon and vehicle documentation.

3. Measure loaded

Check source, hub, and return-path voltage under operation.

4. Re-test

Repeat the vibration, crank, or load condition.
